“3 observations and a chart” on the latest in the digital assets sector

NBA embraces prediction markets through partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket

The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket, naming them its preferred prediction market exchanges and establishing a framework for trading on NBA-related events. The agreements provide access to official league data and marketing opportunities while introducing safeguards against insider trading and market manipulation. The announcement follows reports that Kalshi is nearing a $1 billion capital raise at a $40 billion valuation, nearly double its $22 billion valuation in May, with institutional investors including Sequoia, Tiger Global, and Dragoneer in discussions. We highlight the rapid growth of prediction markets as a new segment of financial markets, with major sports leagues and institutional investors increasingly embracing event-based trading.

Morgan Stanley establishes Digital Asset Lab to explore next-generation financial services

Morgan Stanley has established a Digital Asset Lab to experiment with decentralized finance (DeFi), stablecoins, and tokenization in a secure environment separate from its core banking systems. Described as the place "where technology earns the right to scale at the firm," the lab is expected to test DeFi vaults that use smart contracts to automate investment strategies and allocate capital across decentralized markets. The initiative follows Morgan Stanley's expansion into digital asset custody, Bitcoin ETFs, and crypto trading. We highlight the potential for DeFi and other blockchain-based services to become a core part of future investment platforms.

Mastercard builds security infrastructure for stablecoin payments

Mastercard introduced Stablecoin Security, a service designed to help banks and financial institutions identify fraud, scams, and sanctions risks before stablecoin transactions settle on blockchain networks. The platform combines traditional payment intelligence with on-chain transaction data, enabling institutions to assess risks through existing compliance systems. Expected to become commercially available in 2027, the service represents another step toward bringing stablecoins into mainstream financial infrastructure. We highlight that as stablecoin usage accelerates, established payment networks are developing the security and compliance infrastructure necessary to support widespread institutional adoption.

Arena Digital Capital Management was founded in January 2022 by three experienced traditional finance hedge fund professionals who have been deploying personal capital in the digital asset ecosystem since 2018. The team has managed billions of dollars of capital for high net worth individuals, family offices, and institutions ranging from pension plans and endowments to sovereign wealth funds. We have worked closely with institutional consultants, RIAs, and other advisors in serving their clients.

In May 2022 we launched Arena Digital Capital Partners, with the goal of providing a multi-strategy investment vehicle to access the digital asset ecosystem. Our mandate is to offer broad exposure across the growing digital asset and blockchain sector with an appropriate level of diversification, professional oversight, and manager selection. Our collection of skill sets and our history in the business allows us to understand, assess, and engage with the practitioners of this nascent asset class with a level of diligence required to be responsible stewards of capital. We are happy to periodically share our observations with you.
